eCertify, an Auckland electrical certification and inspection company, tests and tags electrical equipment at workplaces, building sites, offices and rental properties anywhere in the Auckland region. Test and tag is the inspection and electrical testing of plug-in equipment, with a tag on each item recording the test and when the next one is due.
Under regulation 26 of the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010, an appliance used at work that carries a current tag issued under AS/NZS 3760, the New Zealand test and tag standard, is deemed (treated in law as) electrically safe. eCertify tags every item that passes and gives you a register of every item tested.
eCertify's test and tag price in Auckland is NZ$7.90 including GST per item tested and tagged, with a minimum charge of NZ$169.90 including GST per visit. An extension lead counts as one item, and eCertify negotiates lower rates for bulk testing, so larger sites get a quote.

Test and tag is often sold as a box-ticking job. eCertify's test and tag is backed by registered electrical inspectors, so when an item fails, eCertify tells you why it failed and what to do about it. eCertify's director, Jordan Statham, has been an electrical inspector registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) since 2017, and eCertify holds a 5.0 rating on Google.

The Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 approach it from the owner's side. Regulation 15 says the owner or operator of an appliance must not use it, or let anyone else use it, if it is electrically unsafe. Regulation 26 then sets out when an appliance in use is deemed electrically safe:
In practice, a current tag is the recognised way for an Auckland business, hire company or landlord to show its equipment is safe. Building sites run under their own standard, AS/NZS 3012, which covers in-service testing of equipment on construction and demolition sites.
There is no single interval for every item. AS/NZS 3760 bases the retest interval on the type of equipment and the environment it is used in, judged by the level of hazard and the rough treatment the equipment gets, so a power tool in a workshop is usually on a shorter cycle than a monitor in an office. The standard sets indicative intervals in a table, and a responsible person can vary them on the strength of a risk assessment.
AS/NZS 3760 also calls for a retest when an item comes back from a repair that could have affected its electrical safety. eCertify writes the retest date on every tag, so you can see at a glance when each item is next due.

AS/NZS 3760 covers low voltage equipment that plugs in by a flexible cord: power tools, extension leads and cord sets, portable outlet devices, kitchen and office appliances, heaters, battery chargers, and heavy duty tools such as pressure washers and concrete grinders. It applies to equipment already in service, and to new, repaired, second-hand and hire equipment.
eCertify inspects and tests each item to AS/NZS 3760:
A lead and the equipment it feeds are tested and tagged separately. At the end, eCertify gives you a register of every item tested.
AS/NZS 3760, the standard for the safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment, covers new equipment as well as equipment already in use. Tell eCertify what you have and the office will say what your site needs before anything is booked.
Under AS/NZS 3760, an item that fails is labelled to warn against further use and withdrawn from service. What happens next, repair or disposal, is the owner's decision. eCertify identifies each failed item clearly in your register and gives you practical advice on whether it is worth repairing.
eCertify's test and tag price in Auckland is NZ$7.90 including GST per item tested and tagged, with a minimum charge of NZ$169.90 including GST per visit. An extension lead counts as one item. For larger sites, eCertify negotiates a lower bulk rate and quotes it upfront.
Until the retest date on the tag. AS/NZS 3760 requires every tag to show a retest date, and that date depends on the type of equipment and where it is used, so there is no single period for every item. eCertify sets the date on each tag.
Only if you are genuinely competent to. AS/NZS 3760 requires the inspection and testing to be done by a competent person: someone with the training and experience to use the tester and read the results. Owning a tester and a roll of tags is not the same thing.
Regulation 15A of the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 says a landlord must not provide electrically unsafe appliances with a tenancy. Under regulation 26, an appliance supplied with a rental is deemed electrically safe if it has a current AS/NZS 3760 tag, or if it is supplied through an RCD when the tenant first gets it. eCertify tests and tags rental appliances anywhere in Auckland.
No. Test and tag covers plug-in equipment, not the fixed wiring in the building. For the wiring, eCertify's electrical safety check and certificate of verification are the services to look at.
eCertify covers the whole Auckland region and does not work outside it. On-site visits run Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm.
