Before we arrive, make sure your testing and documentation are ready: main earth identified and tagged, electrode location listed on the switchboard and accessible, earth continuity under 0.5 ohm, mains polarity and earth fault loop impedance tested, and your ESC/COC on site. Ask us for the full pre-inspection checklist when you book. Re-inspection charges apply if items are missed and we need to return.

Why mains work always needs an inspection

It is not a judgement call and it is not your client's preference. The Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 classify mains work on an installation as high risk prescribed electrical work, and all high risk prescribed electrical work on a low or extra low voltage installation must be inspected. Switchboard upgrades, mains cable upgrades and new electrodes all land in that bracket.

Photovoltaic systems and mains parallel generation are in the same category, so if you are doing solar the same requirement applies.

The job is not complete until the paperwork is

Worth saying plainly, because it changes when you can invoice. Under the regulations, high risk prescribed electrical work may not be treated as complete until a certificate of compliance, together with any record of inspection required for the work, has been issued for it. The ROI is not an administrative afterthought. It is part of what makes the job finished.

Have this ready before we arrive

Re-inspection charges apply if we have to come back for something that should have been ready, so this list is worth two minutes.

• Main earth identified and tagged.
• Electrode location listed on the switchboard, and physically accessible.
• Earth continuity tested and under 0.5 ohm.
• Mains polarity tested.
• Earth fault loop impedance tested.
• Your ESC or COC on site.
• Access arranged, and someone able to open up if the board is in a locked space.

What you get, and when

You get the record of inspection, with the certificate of compliance attached to it, and we handle the High Risk Database submission to Energy Safety. The regulations set the timeframes here too: a copy of the record of inspection goes to the person who contracted for the work within 20 working days, a copy goes to anyone entitled to request one within 10 working days of the request, and a copy has to be retained for at least seven years. We keep ours, so if a client comes back to you in year five asking for it, we can produce it.

What we do not do

We are not MEPs. Metering work has to be done by a network approved inspector. Tell us if there is metering in scope and we will point you at someone in your area rather than turning up and telling you on the day. What the price includes
