We carry out a full electrical system check of your home, inspecting every part of the installation for incorrect work or unsafe degradation. On completion you get a report on the safety of the installation, with the severity and risk of each issue explained in plain language.

Small repairs are completed on the day, with any additional costs flagged first. Larger repairs are formally quoted. If we find a defect that is an electrical hazard, we tell you immediately and we tell you plainly that it needs to be made safe straight away. In practice that usually means isolating the affected part before we leave, which we do with your agreement.

Who books a safety check

Usually one of four people. Somebody who has been told the house needs a re-wire and wants to know whether that is true before spending. Somebody who has had a warning sign, a burning smell, a warm socket, breakers that keep tripping, lights that dim when the jug goes on. A landlord who wants to know where they stand. And somebody who has just bought a place and wants a list of what to deal with first.

All four want the same thing, which is an honest picture rather than a sales pitch. This check is a report, not a quote with an inspection attached.

What we look at

The whole installation, not a sample. The meter box and main switchboard, consumer mains, the main earthing system and electrode connections, protection and RCDs, then circuits, socket-outlets, switches, light fittings and fixed wired appliances, with testing alongside the inspection. We are looking for two different things: work that was done incorrectly, and work that was fine once but has degraded. The second is the one that catches people, because nothing about it looks new or wrong.

Damp areas get particular attention. Bathrooms, laundries, under the house and anything outdoors are where the wrong fitting for the location turns up most often.

How long it takes

Around an hour on site for a standard home, longer for larger properties or where the switchboard is awkward to reach. We need access to every room and to the switchboard. You do not need to stay for all of it.

What the report tells you

Every issue, with its severity and risk explained in plain language. Not a list of clause numbers. The point of the report is that you can read it yourself and understand what is urgent, what should be planned, and what is simply worth knowing.

If you were told you need a re-wire, the report is what settles it. Sometimes the answer is yes. Often it is a switchboard, RCD protection and a handful of circuits rather than the whole house. Our page on whether you need a re-wire covers how that judgement gets made.

What the price includes

The price is fixed and includes GST. It covers callout and mileage anywhere in Auckland, the inspection and testing, and the full written report. Small repairs done on the day are flagged and agreed with you first. Larger repairs are formally quoted, and you are under no obligation to have us do them.

Note that a safety check is a report on the installation, not a certificate. If you need a document for an insurer, a lender, Council or a power company, you want an energy works certificate instead. Ask us and we will point you at the right one before you book.
