When Council asks for an energy works certificate

Building consent work throws up an electrical paper trail, and the question is always the same: can you show that the electrical installation is safe and compliant? Where the electrician who did the work is still around and their paperwork is in order, that evidence is their certificate of compliance and the electrical safety certificate issued once the work was connected.

The gap opens when that paperwork does not exist. The contractor has moved on, the work is older than the records, the certificates were never passed on at settlement, or the work was done by a previous owner. An energy works certificate closes that gap. It is a fresh assessment of the installation as it stands today, certified by a registered inspector, and it does not depend on anybody digging up a decade old file.

Book it before the final inspection, not after

The most common reason a compliance date slips is that the electrical certificate was left until somebody asked for it. By then the sign off is already waiting, and if the inspection turns up remedial work you are adding a repair and a re-visit to a timeline that has no room in it.

Get it done while there is still slack in the programme. If the installation is clean you have your document early and it costs you nothing to have had it in hand. If it is not, you find out at a point where fixing it is an inconvenience rather than a delay.

What we do on site

Our registered inspectors work through the installation: the main switchboard, consumer mains, the main earthing system and its connections, protection and RCDs, then circuits, socket-outlets, switches, light fittings and any fixed wired appliances. Testing runs alongside the inspection rather than replacing it. Damp areas and anything outdoors get particular attention, because that is where the correct rating for the location most often has not been used.

We need access to the switchboard and to every part of the installation covered by the certificate. Where something is genuinely inaccessible we will tell you before we start, because the certificate has to state what it covers.

How long it takes

Around an hour on site for a standard residential job. Where the installation is safe and up to code, the certificate is issued on the day, before we leave, and you can attach it to your compliance paperwork immediately.

If the installation does not pass

You get a remedial report instead, in plain language, with each item and why it matters. Small issues we fix on site once you have agreed the cost. Larger ones are quoted formally so you can price the work properly rather than guess at it. When the remedial work is complete the certificate follows, and we do not charge you for a second full inspection to get there.

What the price includes

The price is fixed and includes GST. It covers callout and mileage anywhere in Auckland, the inspection and testing, and either your certificate or a full remedial report. Costs beyond the visit are always confirmed with you before any additional work starts.
